Resurfacing

I'm still alive and my dissertation is making me cranky, so clearly that means it's time to update after a long hiatus. I also have a stress fracture in my foot so I've been cooped up for a while--at least the freezing cold means I'm not the only one.

I still watch a lot of TV, but I find that dissertating doesn't leave me with a lot of brainspace to write about it. Talking about it is easier, since my two of my neighbors are in fandom and Trekkies to boot. (It also means that yet again I saw no Mummers Parade, for those of you familiar with my city and its wacky tradition).

In an effort to make only resolutions that make me happy, I did make a list of TV to watch in 2014, mostly based on long ago cancelled shows I had no time to watch early on in grad school. (Some of them I did watch sporadically during their original runs). I also am contemplating ways to be a better commenter in all of my various social spaces.

I just finished Life which activated by old school XF partnership kink while being heartbreaking and hilarious by turns. Currently working on Pushing Daisies. It used to get on my nerves because Ned is a sometimes kind of a horrible human. Then the show started calling him on it more, so I'm going to stick with it. I also have things I'd like to rewatch, but that's another post.

The rest of my TV list is behind the cut. Additions welcome.

So I just binged the season of Revenge thus far in about two days, since it premiered while I was in Russia.

Thoughts behind the cut.

Now, to wait for someone to write something long and plotty that features Emily being smarter than everyone.

1. I am having a good research day. I feel it is important to write these things down for the next bad stretch.

2. My sisters watch Revenge, and I have decided to start watching it too. I need more sociopaths in my fictional life. (Academia takes care of my real-life quota just fine).

3. I have a pseud Twitter so I can follow Russian opposition thought/electoral politics. It would drive me nuts as a means to keep up with people's actual personal lives, but it's definitely helping me keep track of the protests. Another reason to be back in America-- one of the proposed sites for the February 4th meeting is very near where we used to live.

4. I did create at Tumblr the other day because I was tired of having to read random links rather than having an organized list. In the grand tradition of today's internet, I expect I'll be using it to consume rather than generate content.

5. I still have not watched Series 2 of Sherlock. Maybe that will be my reward for finishing my next batch of files.

I have a move to finish and a dissertation on top of that, so a ficlet is the best I can do to assuage my deep longing for 7th Year Hogwarts fic featuring Neville being awesome and Minerva weathering the storm.

TITLE: Respite
AUTHOR: MC Donovan
FANDOM: Harry Potter
RATING: Gen, and nothing to warn for either.
SPOILERS: Books and the final film; this is influenced by movie canon.
CATEGORY: Neville/Luna-ish, but Minerva/Hogwarts is still my OTP.
SUMMARY: Minerva, looking for space to breathe.

1. Sometimes, when I don't want to work on my dissertation, I watch classic TV as a kind of cultural history homework. This is the best way I can think of to explain all of the "Cheers" I have been watching. Main assessments: it still holds up well, and wow, "Friends" is more derivative than I could realize at the time.

2. I miss teaching, though I don't mind this being the first month of May in two years I haven't been surrounded by blue books.

3. I've posted in the past (the fairly distant past at this point, given that my 8 year LJ versary is coming up), about the problems with the writing of disabled characters in fanfiction. I used to love House because he refused to be the Inspirational Story of Disabled Person Triumphing Over Adversity. And if you've ever wondered why that was so refreshing to me check out this post on why people prefer their disabled people warm and fuzzy rather than fighting or cranky. On being a "Good Cripple".

4. I think in the epic battle of Me vs. Russian bureaucracy, I may win in the end. At least as far as getting both myself and the husband into the country goes, anyway.

5. And now for belated thoughts on this week's episode of "Alicia Florrick, how so awesome?" Otherwise known as The Good Wife. I'm still in the bowled over stages, so I think all I can actually say at this stage is that if this show gets cancelled I will cry, possibly for days.

Write about television. It's not a very well kept secret that sometimes Netflix Instant makes me afraid I'll never leave my apartment again. And I feel like it's time to write about Trek.

DS9 thoughts, all over the place, but spoilers through Season 4, mostly about seasons 2 and 3 ).

Other things I've been watching: Dirty Sexy Money, Ugly Betty all the way through, and the Good Wife. Posts on the latter two are likely.

So far, 2011 is my year of dissertation stuff and catching up on old television, now that I'm out of Downton Abbey. I'm working my way through Wonderfalls (which I watched when it aired, but I was always too busy teaching to watch our DVDs), and rewatching Homicide: Life on the Street. My husband is into BSG, and I am not, which leads me to the fannish opinion behind the cut, as well as my thoughts on my Homicide rewatch. HLoTs spoilers through the entire run, though I just finished "Crosetti." And somehow talking about BSG led me to think a little about Alias, too.

Apparently this is a thing I still do? I have to admit to a lot of nerves, since I haven't written anything not related to graduate school in aeons. Crossposting this to LJ and it will go up on AO3 soon too, now that I finally have an account there.

I blame my total infatuation with Downton Abbey. And Robert and Cora. This one's set pre-series.

So there are things to say about the state of my dissertation committee (nevermind my dissertation), but I have spent the last day and a half mainlining Downton Abbey, and it is time to tell the internet about it. Spoilers behind the cut.

I am well aware I owe the internet an update on graduate school. (Still in, still nuts).

But the more important thing is, I got a Kindle as a present for passing my PhD exams. And the Vorkosigan saga is available for free download. And I am down to the last two books and I have so much to say.

Spoilers through A Civil Campaign.
